WEEKEND WINE PICK
Weekend Wine Pick for February 19th
Raphael “La Fontana”, North Fork Long Island 2007
What’s in the bottle? Star bright purple color with an electric pink rim. The wine is opaque giving you an idea of what is to come. The nose offers brambly black fruit with a touch of menthol and green bell pepper. The palate is medium bodied and plush, but dense. It offers loads of dark fruit with an herbaceous lift that gives this wine complexity. The 2007 La Fontana is a blend of 40% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec. I have seen well made Long Island wines like this age a decade, so drink now or cellar (2010-2020). Knowledge:
2007 is arguably the greatest vintage that Long Island has ever seen in its 36 year history. A long growing season that extended into late October gave the grapes a few extra weeks to ripen. Long Island is a cooler climate growing region which is why early ripening grapes like Cabernet Franc and Merlot do well. I believe that Cabernet Franc is the grape that Long Island should rest its hat on and the 2007 La Fontana supports this theory.
Service: Decant for at least 1 hour prior to drinking and serve in large Bordeaux style glasses. What to eat: Lamb Chop Lollipops with mint sauce
